Ronnie Sprenger: I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but the timing wasn't right

That’s the question Ronnie Sprenger faced in 2013 when he was fed up with his job as a branch manager at another distributor and ready to become an owner at Winsupply.

All the pieces were in place for Ronnie to open a new local company in Kerrville, Texas. He’d:

  • Consulted with his wife.

  • Met with Winsupply.

  • Talked with local company presidents for several years.

  • Even had his eye on a building.

Ronnie was ready to sign all the papers.

The Decision to Wait

But the night before the deal was done, something didn’t feel quite right.

“I’d gotten all mixed up,” Ronnie said. “I’d put my financials instead of my family first.”

Back then his daughter, Chelsea, was ready for high school – and eager for band, track, volleyball, and theater.

“I know what it takes to open a supply house. I knew if I started a Winsupply local company right now, I’d miss a lot of her concerts, meets, games and plays. I didn’t want that to happen.”

So he called Roger Lewis, an area leader at Winsupply, and told him he’d changed his mind. At least for now.

“Roger said, ‘The door is always open,’ which surprised me,” Ronnie said. “It made me feel even more at ease with my decision.”

So they tore up the papers. Ronnie returned to his branch manager job, a bit more emboldened, since he knew he wouldn’t be there forever. When the timing was right, he’d have another chance at Winsupply.

A Second Chance

In 2018, when Chelsea was ready to graduate from high school, Ronnie got back in touch with Roger and got the paperwork going again.

Ronnie opened Winsupply of Kerrville on April 1, 2018.

“Everything I expected – everything I was told by Roger and all the people at Winsupply – was true. When these guys talk to you, you can take it to the bank.”

Today Ronnie's company has nine employees – five from Ronnie’s old branch – and they continue to grow the business.

“My family values are what put this decision on hold in 2013. Making this change and coming to Winsupply – there was never a doubt it was going to happen. It was a matter of when. The timing had to be right."
